Debaters Excel at State
Team of two places 8th at State competition

by Haley Miller

Dedication, discipline and energy. These are qualities Kingman debaters have possessed since the start of the debate season. Hundreds of hours have been spent before and after school searching and filing information concerning alternative energy. Luckily, all this hard work paid off for them in the end. Six Eagle Debaters qualified for the State competition that was held at Washburn-Rural High School in Topeka on January 23rd and 24th. The tournament was made up of 61 teams from 28 different schools in the 4A classification.

Representing the Eagles for the 2-speaker State competition were Kali Boroughs, senior, and Jessica Berry, sophomore, Kaitlin Kuszmaul, senior, and Bethany Bailey, junior, and Dallas Lawrence, senior, and Ciera Ogden, sophomore.

Only eight other schools qualified three or more teams for 2-speaker State competition. Kali and Jessica lead the team with a 4-2 record and 29 speaks, which placed them in the top 16 teams of the tournament. The duo lost to Tonganoxie in their octafinal match up and walked away with an 8th place medal. The other teams of two performed well with Dallas and Ciera ending with a 2-4 record and 33 speaks and Kaitlin and Bethany ending with a 3-3 record and 32 speaks.

The Eagles faced tough competition throughout the tournament from schools such as Tonganoxie, Buhler and Louisburg who have highly regarded debate teams.

When asked about the success of Debates first year at Kingman High School, debate coach Mr. Darryl Mannebach said, "To even have a team at state is an accomplishment. I’m very pleased with the commitment and time all of the students put in and I’m looking forward to seeing this program grow."
