Every year FBLA holds a fundraiser for the March of Dimes association. This year the local chapter came together with the idea of a Guitar Hero Tournament. Chair leaders consisted of Carrie Phelps, senior, and juniors Sarah Schrag and Meredith Voran. These girls spent many hours brain storming and with the help and approval of the entire board, FBLA came together with this plan.
Guitar Hero is a game that just about every student in the building has played. When sign up sheets started three weeks ago many students and teachers were eager to put their name down. Students had four categories to choose from: Easy, Medium, Hard, and Expert. The tournament was done bracket style and students played during lunch. After each win the student/teacher would advance and have a better chance of playing in the final round.
During the span of the week, students who didn’t sign up had the opportunity to play a short round during their lunch period. FBLA officers decided to charge $0.50 per song for students who had an interest of filling in free time. This chance brought many students up waiting in line to get a turn at showing off their skills. Some students risked being tardy, but it was very entertaining to witness the thrill of their fun while helping out a great foundation.
On Tuesday January 20th the championship was held during reading period in the old gym. The entire student body was present to catch a glimpse of the highly anticipated final rounds rocking out. Gift baskets containing cans of pop, candy, and a special surprise were given away to each winner from FBLA as the top prize. The Hard and Expert levels received an extra Video Max rental card and the champion of the teachers’ bracket received a Houdini’s Gift Certificate.
FBLA would like to thank all who participated and helped out by donating and playing. All proceeds will be presented in March during the state conference in Topeka for the March of Dimes.
