Books that Bite
If Twilight left you thirsty for more vampire books, try these other vampireous novels.

by Bethany Bailey

With Twilight come, and (thankfully) gone, some might feel a sense of emptiness in their lives. However, for those of us with a less than obsessive love of all things that walk in the night, we might be searching for a new source of our Vampire novels. With a little bit of searching (or if you just keep reading this article) it’s not hard to discover that many other authors can help us get our fix. For example: Silver Kiss by Annette Curtis Klause is perfect for anyone who loved the romance in Twilight. The story revolves around a girl, Zoë, and a vampire, Simon. Simon helps Zoë deal with her mother’s illness as Zoë helps Simon deal with his lost life. A chick lit novel to end all.

If you’re looking for something a little less romantic and a bit more exciting, try Peeps by Scott Westerfeld. Imagine this: Vampirism is actually caused by a parasite that is spread through any contact with a person’s fluids (saliva, blood, etc.). Those infected gain super strength, agility, speed, and health. Unfortunately, they also gain an appetite for raw meat and lose whatever civilized part of their brain they had. Now imagine all the benefits without losing any of the brain. That would describe Cal Thompson. Cal has to hunt down everyone of his ex-girlfriends, including the one who gave him the parasite, in order to help save the world. Peeps is a mile-a-minute thriller with fun little facts about parasites and the world we share with them.

If neither of those are up your alley, then perhaps Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead is more your style. Vampire Academy combines the exotic thrill of vampires with a "Gossip Girl"-esque plot. Rose Hathaway, a half vampire and guardian, has dedicated her life to protecting Lissa Dragomir, a full blood vampire and her best friend. Full of boy troubles, psychic vampires, and the occasional run away plot, Vampire Academy is perfect for anyone who would enjoy The Hills if The Hills had more plot.

With all of these wonderful vampire novels, it seems impossible that someone could say that Twilight is the end of their vampire repertoire. (Well, perhaps if they label that list "Vampire Novels that Involve Copious Amounts of Sparkling.") So everyone out there searching for a new addiction to curl up with under a blanket on these cold days, here’s what you need to do: go to the Library, look these up (they’re all there), and get to reading. Do it for the vampires. (Team Jacob all the way!)
