Anything’s Possible - Regardless of Your Disabilities

By Katie Aich

It’s not very often that a motivational speaker comes to a school with the ability to affect so many members of his audience. Thanks to Jon Wollen and the Rotary Club, Jerry Traylor visited with KHS students on Tuesday, November 4 and explained all the obstacles he overcame while living with cerebral palsy.  A loud, head-strong individual, he commanded attention in the auditorium while taking the students of KHS through his journey across the country, from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Brooklyn Bridge all the while running on his crutches.  He also ran several races and even climbed Pikes Peak in Colorado.

Hearing someone with a disability speak about all the things one can accomplish helps to motivate us to make changes in our own lives.  Encouraging his audience to take a negative and turn it into a positive was one of Mr. Traylor’s biggest lessons. Learning to see his crutches as a useful tool and not something to slow him down was what made the difference for Traylor.

Traylor sent his audience away from this unique assembly with inspiration to think of ways to help ourselves do our own individual best.
