Eagle Fever
Can school spirit be revived at KHS?

by Nicole Sterling

Following a disappointing 2007 football season, one cheerleader was inspired to turn school spirit around at KHS. Jane Eaves, senior, decided that students needed a little incentive to show more school spirit and support for our football team. She came up with the idea of Eagle Fever to renew the student body’s dormant school spirit. Eagle Fever is a head to head class competition throughout football season to raise school spirit and increase attendance at games. During the season, students will have many opportunities to earn points for their class.

To earn points, students must attend games. Attendance at a home game tallies one point per student, and away games equal 2 points per person. Additionally, the class posting the highest attendance at a game will receive 20 bonus points if the Eagles secure a victory.

When asked how she came up with the idea of Eagle Fever, Jane replied that she had accidentally stumbled over the idea while surfing the net for pep rally ideas. Eaves was looking for a way to generate more school spirit, and with the help of the internet she came up with more than just a single pep rally game when she found the idea of Eagle Fever. She had a few brainstorming sessions with Mr. Kelley and Mr. Henry to try to figure out the reward for the Eagle Fever contest. They wanted to go beyond the generic class pizza party to make sure that KHS students would get excited and want to participate. After much consideration, they determined the reward; at the end of the season the class with the most points will get to spend an afternoon out of school at the Kingman Theatre, watching a movie and enjoying snacks.

The student body’s progress in this event is measured in large drawings of thermometers on the commons area. Eaves indicated that the school seems ready for Eagle Fever. "The principals have helped a lot. They were very supportive of my idea," she stated.

Eagle fever is currently planned to last through the football season, but Eaves says she would love for it to be year round. However, for now they are experimenting with football season.
