Rachel's Challenge...One Year Later
Staffer calls on student body to remember their commitment
by Sarah Schrag
"Rachel’s Challenge is a program that Inspires, Instructs, and Enables students to bring a positive change to your school atmosphere", (www.rachelschallenge.com). This message came directly to our school one year ago during the Rachel’s Challenge assembly. It was suppose to bring our school a new beginning by showing the student body how we should represent ourselves with these great values. But can we honestly say that this changed our school?
Think back, can you even remember the five promises we agreed to keep? If not, they were as follows: 1) Eliminate Prejudice by looking for the best in others, 2) Dare to Dream, 3) Choose your Influences, 4) Small Acts of Kindness, and most of all 5) Start a Chain Reaction.
Do any of these ring a bell? All five are simple, everyday acts that are the core belief of the program. Incorporating these should have impacted our lives as well as the lives of our peers.
Looking at our school I have seen some change but not to the full potential. The majority of the school was touched by Rachel’s Challenge, but not so much anymore. Everyday in the commons area the proof is shown. The banner everyone signed still hangs in the same spot just as it did when it was put up. By signing that banner we promised to be better people and improve our society by starting a chain reaction and starting it at Kingman High School.
I encourage everyone to find your name on that banner and reminisce on what you have done to change our school for the better. Let your name and the names of your peers inspire you to continue carrying forth the message our community should represent everyday. When was the last time you started a chain reaction?
