Still in the Game
Through a rough season, Volleyball team works to keep up spirit

by Clint Dick

This year’s volleyball team has an array of athleticism, depth, and coaching. The returning varsity players have had a positive attitude after last year’s late season meltdown in which the Eagles lost their final 9 matches, finishing with a sour 11-25 record.

The Lady Eagles opened the 08’-09’ season with a spirit-lifting win over the Wellington Crusaders, 20-25, 25-19, 25-21. The victory was short-lived though as Kingman struggled through their next 23 games.

Head Coach Seth Roe, determined to get his team out of a rough slump, took the volleyball girls on a one-day field trip to the Mosey’s Outdoor Adventure Course where the girls were tested both mentally and physically through elements such as a 30-foot climbing wall and a 200-foot zip line. "The team learned that through determination and team support, every individual is capable of overcoming adversity," said Coach Roe as he reflected on the field trip. The result was an Eagle victory over the Larned Indians in the final home game of the season.

After a loss at Clearwater, Kingman’s record stands at 2-24 and with just 2 quads and 1 tournament left before sub-state, the girls will have to play their best ball of the season to end on a positive note. "We must learn to react positively even in the face of adversity," stated Coach Roe. "We have struggled, not so much to execute a strategy as much as to execute skills consistently."
