Painting Your Mark
Art IV Student paints murals around town as class project
by Haley Miller
In 1989 Stacy Miller made her mark at KHS by painting the sports mural on the south east wall of the old gym. Today, Kali Boroughs’09 is making her own mark by painting a sport mural at the middle school and two other murals around town.
If an art student is dedicated enough to take Art IV, they have the privilege to pick what projects they want to do during the year. At the beginning of this year, KHS Art Instructor Ms. Kay Stimatze asked Kali if she would want to paint 3 murals, one at the middle school, the golf course and swimming pool.
Kali accepted the challenge, and right now Kali is working on the mural at the middle school. The mural is on the west wall across from the locker rooms. In the middle of the wall Kali is painting an eagle with a football player, boy’s basketball player, and boy’s track and field player to the left of the eagle. To the right of the eagle there will be a volleyball player, girl’s basketball player, girl’s track and field player, and a cheerleader.
The process Kali uses to create the silhouettes involves finding a portrait on the computer, and then, using a projector, she transfers the pictures to a bigger sheet of paper with an ink pen. Next, she shades the back and takes it down to where she’s creating the mural and, with a pencil, draws an outline of the figure on the wall.
The time and effort Kali will put into these creations will be well worth it in the end. Stacy Miller’s name is still on our old gym wall and will most likely be there until the school is no longer in existence. Kali’s name, much like Stacy’s, will be on the wall to inspire future eagles to make their own mark.
