KHS Students Getting Involved
125th Celebration promotes students being active in the community

by Sarah Schrag

If you haven’t already noticed, our town has been full of excitement and lots of entertainment for the past two weeks. From a concert by the activity center to a demo derby on the rodeo grounds, plenty of activities have been stirring about in Kingman. The 125th Anniversary of Kingman is a grand thing to celebrate, and many people put in their time and effort to make sure this event went as planned and to make it a great success.

A commendable effort was put forth by many high school students from various clubs and classes. All these students come from different sections of our school. Band, Jazz Band, FBLA, Stuco, Mrs. Bradshaw’s American History classes, and the Government classes are just a few areas where a numerous amount of students came from to aid in our town’s celebration. Clubs took advantage by selling concessions, while others demonstrated their stewardship or gained community service experience. Some of these students took time from school and their days off to help.

Jazz Band had a great performance at the opening ceremonies. Playing a variety of songs such as "The Star Spangled Banner" and "St. Louis Blues." Each of the members were very enthusiastic about having a great kickoff for the festivities. Even though there wasn’t a great attendance for the opening ceremonies, the Jazz Band set an appropriate tone.

FBLA assisted with the Kids Day Carnival. Although school was not in session, many members came out to help put on the carnival for the community. When asked about the importance of helping our community in this way, Meredith Voran, junior volunteer, stated, "It was frustrating at moments, but giving our time really made a huge difference." Many children of all ages attended the carnival and it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of high school students who contributed to the effort.

Mrs. Bradshaw’s American History classes had been working hard on the float they entered in Saturday’s parade. All second, third, and fourth hour classes worked Thursday and Friday on the float, putting in a tremendous amount of brain storming on costume ideas, and volunteering their extra hours. Their efforts turned into a success when they won two awards for their float. The first award they received was 1st place in the educational department. The second award given was 1st place from the Lions Club which signified they had the best float out of all entries in the parade.

These are just a few of the many students and groups in our school who contributed to the 125th. Our student body makes up a significant presence in the population of Kingman. When we participate and demonstrate interest in our community, it shows how well rounded our town is. All the students who had a part in helping put on the 125th activities deserve applause. By lending a hand, they not only contribute time and capability of working, but also a great respect for our town.
