I Wear My Sunglasses (in Kingman) at Night
Rock'n out at the 125th Music Festival
by Nicole Sterling
We always complain about not having anything exciting to do in Kingman. However, with the celebration of Kingman’s 125th anniversary, we had our chance. It’s true that not all events at the 125th celebration were geared towards teenagers, but there were some events that many of us enjoyed.
One of these events in particular was the Music Festival held on Friday October 10, the opening night of the week long celebration. The cost to get in was $10 per person, but if you had a 125th button you could get in for $5, a very reasonable price for live entertainment and no gas money needed! Artists such as the J Morrison Band and Sofa Kingdom performed along with a couple of other groups. By far the most crowd-friendly band had to be Sofa Kingdom; they had tons of spunk and energy and really got the crowd sweating to the 80’s! The J Morrison Band was pretty impressive also. They performed a flawless version of a classic Jeff Healey song along with many other good ones.
The Festival was set up by the stables at the Kingman Activity Center. As crowd members arrived, they were admitted after getting a bracelet. The atmosphere was complete with food vendors which were on either side of the walk way selling anything from hot dogs and hamburgers to funnel cakes and fried Oreos.
The Festival was geared for all ages from small children to teenagers and even adults. They had a separation block set up in front of the stage so people of the legal drinking age could do so while people that weren’t could still enjoy the concerts as well.
The festival was, in my opinion, a great success. There were tons of people at the concert enjoying the camaraderie of good friends, good music, and great food. I hope that this event encouraged people to take advantage of things that are offered here in Kingman. The 125th celebration committee did a great job on the music festival along with the rest of the events throughout the week too.
Although Kingman is a small town and isn’t always hopping with things to do, if we take advantage of the events and activities offered, we might be able to encourage organizations who consider trying events at other times, not just major town anniversaries, to change Kingman into a more entertaining place.
