Jack Boyer's Movie 'Exposed', Finally EXPOSED

Biggest Film Festival in Kansas, Tallgrass Film Festival, chooses 'exposed

by Hanjoon Park

Nearly every American who is captivated by film making dreams of becoming the next Steven Spielberg. One of the first steps to achieving this dream is by making local films and entering them in contests. Jack Boyer, junior, who is an avid film maker, recently entered his film "Exposed" to be in the Tallgrass Film Festival contest. The Tallgrass committee voted on three films and ultimately thought Jack’s was the better of the three.

H.P. First, What motivated you to make this movie?

J.B. It’s actually just a project for a flim class I was taking in Wichita. The students were divided into groups and given a genre. I don’t think the class instructor expected much out of us, but I think all the films came out really nice.

H.P You directed with Jaclyn Turner, how did you meet her?

J.B I just met her in the class. She’s an architect, so she was able to help us plan the set really well. She’s also a great artist, and she did the storyboards for us.

H.P How did you learn to make movies?

J.B I learned to make good movies through the WAMPA film class. I had a base for doing it before, but the class helped in detail.

H.P Can you explain the process of directing?

J.B There’s a lot to it, even for directing just a two-minute film. You basically just want everything to go the way you see it when you read the screenplay as far as what the actors are doing and how everything looks.

H.P How did you recruit the actors?

J.B Greg Boaldin from the Gregory Agency was contacted, and he let some of his actors know that we were holding auditions.

H.P How much money did the project require, and how did you get that money?

J.B We actually worked with a zero-dollar budget. A few of us paid for things out of our pocket, but we spent next to nothing.

H.P What message did you want this movie to tell?

J.B Originally, the film was supposed to serve as an advertisement for the film festival. We wanted to show our main character looking for his perfect world, which he finds in Tallgrass.

H.P Its title, Exposed, why did you pick this word for the title?

J.B The title is kind of a play on words with camera film and also what the main character is dealing with. Tanya Merritt, who helped with the film, suggested it and we all liked it.

H.P Do you have any plans to continue movie-related jobs?

J.B I hope to enter another short film in next year’s festival on my own, without the restrictions of the class. I also want to attend film school and make a career out of it.

H.P The final poll was from the internet. The other movie, Only Fooling You, accused your team of cheating through the interest. What do you think about that?

J.B As it turned out, a third person party with no connection to the films reported the cheating on the group that made the film "What Goes Around...". But it all ended up fine.

H.P Is there a big event for the winner?

J.B I’m not really sure what we gain by winning. Our film will be shown twice and the others will only be shown once, as I understand it. But we will get some special recognition.

Boyer wanted to thank the people who helped make the movie and expressed that he loved every bit of being part of the production.
